On this page

The short version

  • Like almost every website, our server keeps logs of the requests it receives, including your IP address, browser details and the pages you request.
  • We set a first-party cookie and run our own first-party analytics script so we can understand how the site is used.
  • If you fill in a form, such as the newsletter signup or the contact form, we store what you submit.
  • We do not sell your information, and we do not use third-party advertising networks.

Server logs

Every time your browser requests a page, image or other file from this site, our server records details of that request. These logs include:

  • your IP address;
  • details your browser sends, such as its type and version, your operating system, and your preferred language;
  • the pages and files requested, the date and time, and the address of the page that linked you here (the referrer), if your browser provides it.

We use logs to keep the site running, to diagnose errors, to protect the site against abuse, and to understand in aggregate how people find and use our guides.

Cookies and analytics

We set a first-party cookie, meaning a small file stored by your browser that is set by this site and read only by this site. It lets us tell whether requests come from the same browser, for instance to count returning visitors.

We also run a first-party analytics script on our pages. It is served from our own server and sends information about your visit, such as the pages you view and how you move between them, back to our own server only. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising services.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the site will still work. Blocking JavaScript will also stop the analytics script; all of our content is readable without it.

Information you send us

When you submit a form on this site, we store what you enter:

  • Newsletter signup: your email address and any optional details you choose to give, such as your first name, your interests and how many cats you have. We use these only to send you the Mittenwell Letter and to make it more relevant.
  • Contact form: your name, email address and message, so that we can read and reply to it.

Our forms never ask for payment details, passwords or government identification numbers, and you should not include them in a message.

Information stored only in your browser

The ticks on our new cat checklist are saved in your browser's local storage so the list remembers your progress. This stays on your device; you can clear it with the "Clear all ticks" button or through your browser settings.

Who we share information with

We do not sell or rent your information. We may share it with service providers who host or operate the site on our behalf, only as needed for them to do so, or where the law requires us to.

How long we keep it

We keep server logs and analytics data for as long as we need them for the purposes above. Newsletter details are kept until you unsubscribe, and contact messages for as long as needed to deal with your message and any follow-up.

Your choices

You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in every email. You can ask us what information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing privacy@mittenwell.com. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local privacy laws.

Children

Our site is written for a general audience. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this notice

If we change how we handle information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
